Fluoride

Some people disapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water because too much of it can cause a brown stain on their teeth. Also fluoride occurs naturally in high concentrations, where skeletal brittleness and crippling is common, that is another reason people don’t want fluoride in their water. On top of that there is increased risk of hip fracture, birth defects, cancer, arthritis, thyroid dysfunction, and the lowering of a person’s IQ. Finally, fluoride is a toxic poison and did not decrease tooth decay in some experiments. My position on adding fluoride to drinking water is making it available to everyone in the U.S. If some people do not want it, there could be an attachment available for your sink to filter the fluoride out. I support fluoride for many reasons. One being that there are many cases where fluoride has proven to be a good thing and it has helped prevent tooth decay. Also it is already wide-spread through out the country. Why not continue it? These are the many reasons I support it.
Many things had to be done before fluoride could be widely used in toothpaste and mouthwash. When McKay found fluoride he had to figure out a way to decrease the amount of the fluoride in the water without losing its effect. Then different compounds had to be developed for different uses. The three that were developed all derived from hydrofluoric acid, which in turn is made by reacting sulfuric acid with fluorspar, a calcium fluoride-rich ore. One of the first developed was sodium fluoride. It was not very soluble in the presence of calcium phosphates, the abrasive used in most early toothpastes so it was soon discarded. Another is stannous fluoride; it was more advanced than sodium fluoride because it paired with calcium pyrophosphate which could be used in toothpaste. The final one and the one still used today is sodium monofluorophosphate or MFP. It was developed by Ozark. These are the technological advances that had to be made before fluoride could be widely used.
One of the most concerning side effects for me is my teeth turning brown because who really wants brown teeth. Also that could mean that I might have had too much exposer to fluoride and that could cause other serious side effects. Another is a loose in IQ; I really don’t want to be less smart. Finally the last side effect I am worried about is cancer. All cancer is a bad thing and no one wants it. I am no different than any else. These are the side effects I am most worried about.
